Great horned owls

Think local birds only nest in spring? Think again.

Most local birds nest in spring, but the great horned owl is different. It begins nesting in winter (not in a self-made nest; it opts for a tree cavity or a nest made by another bird, like a crow or hawk) and is very territorial at this time.

Every January, February and March, Summit Metro Parks biologists and citizen volunteers conduct owl surveys to study populations. Recorded owl calls are played, and owl responses are documented.

Great horned owls are the largest owls in the Metro Parks, and they are plentiful.
