Clients of UDS delight in Spree For All

Summit Metro Parks wants visitors of all abilities to enjoy hiking in the parks. That’s why, 12 years ago, we created Spree For All, an award-winning hiking series on flat, easy trails.

But how do we know if our trails are actually user-friendly for hikers with walkers, canes, wheelchairs or strollers? Each year, we ask our friends at United Disability Services in Akron (UDS) to put a few of our trails to the test. We use their feedback to make any needed surface repairs.

We asked Lisa Armstrong, communications director at UDS, what Spree For All means to her clients.

SMP: What are a few ways that Spree For All benefits clients of UDS?
LA:
Spree For All is a great opportunity for the people served by United Disability Services to learn more about their community, experience the beautiful park system right in our own back yard, and encounter nature in ways they may otherwise not be able. The accessible trails are perfect for all levels of ability and provide the opportunity to engage in a healthy and fun activity.

Our clients experience a variety of benefits from participating in the annual Spree For All including increased self-esteem and self-confidence that comes with achieving a walking goal.

SMP: Your clients have tested our spree trails for several years now. What is their favorite part about coming out to test the trails?
LA:
Our clients love knowing they are helping others who visit the Metro Parks. In their role as trail testers and park ambassadors, they are proud of the fact they play an important part in ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy the parks as much as they do.

“Our clients love knowing they are helping others who visit the Metro Parks.”

SMP: Any fun trail testing stories from past years?
LA:
We like to be able to combine our trail testing with other experiences in the parks including picnicking, fishing and birdwatching. Our group was even followed by a groundhog once, which for some was maybe just a little too close to nature.

SMP: Why is it important that Summit Metro Parks host Spree For All each year?
LA:
Spree For All provides an opportunity unlike any other for individuals, families and friends to get out for a hike and it creates an awareness of the amazing natural resources we have right here in Summit County. The parks are a great place to meet new people, get some fresh air and exercise, and it’s free!

Armstrong added that trail testing is an activity that the people served by UDS look forward to each year.

“We are proud of our partnership with Summit Metro Parks and its commitment to ensuring that the parks are accessible to everyone,” said Armstrong.
