Carolyn Dunlavy

Spotlight: November 2009
Carolyn Dunlavy, of Akron, was the latest recipient of the Star Award. She was nominated by David "Woody" Stover, gardener at F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm, for spearheading work in the park's Phenology Garden.

As part of the Master Gardeners of Summit County, Dunlavy and other volunteers monitor the garden's plants and collect data March through November. The information helps researchers study phenology - the reoccurrence of biological phenomena and their relationship to weather.

According to Stover, Dunlavy's efforts are "essential in maintaining this unique area," and she was instrumental in facilitating the garden's relocation - necessary due to construction - in October. Dunlavy admits that moving the garden to another spot in the park was difficult, but she won't take complete credit for its success. "It was a great team effort between the Master Gardeners and staff at Metro Parks," she said.

Dunlavy is passionate about caring for both plants and people. She works full-time as a caretaker, helping aging individuals stay in their homes. In her free time she teaches others how to nurture plants. "I love taking what I've learned through the Master Gardeners program and giving back to my friends and people in the community," she said.
